The workshop aims at bringing together scientists using the tool of numerical modelling to understand mantle and lithospheric dynamics. It shall provide a platform for 'in-depth discussions' on technical and conceptual aspects and perspectives from both fields. Topics to be discussed include a) Plates and convection - the Inclusion of lithospheric dynamics in models of mantle convection b) state-of-the-art numerical methods c) experiences with soft - and hardware concepts for the solution of geodynamics problems (parallel computing, visualization etc.) The format of the workshop: In order to facilitate intense discussions and interactions, poster -and video sessions rather than oral presentations will form the essential part of the meeting. These sessions will be chaired by chairpersons who will during and/or after the session collect ideas and material from the participants. The chairpersons will be asked to summarize and to highlight the poster session, followed by a panel discussions. In order to give oversea participants the possibility to get reasonable air-fares without staying a full week the meeting starts on Saturday. The place of the workshop: The workshop will take place in the Strandhotel Seeduyn on the island of Vlieland. Vlieland is a scenic small island in the North Sea. The island can be reached by a ferry boat from the town of Harlingen. The trip takes about 1.45 h or about 0.45h by speedboat. There is only one village on the island, thus being an ideal place for an intense workshop. The hotel is located directly at the beach, in walking distance from the village. Private cars are not allowed on Vlieland. They have to be parked in Harlingen. Besides meeting facilities and accommodation the hotel offers many recreational facilities (pool, sauna, biking, horseback riding). The total cost per participant will be about 200.-Hfl for Registration fee, plus 500. - Hfl for full board accommodation, including the return trip by boat from Harlingen to the island. The price is based on double occupancy. Add about 40.-Hfl per person/night for single occupancy. One Dutch Guilder 1 Hfl. corresponds to about 0.64 USD and to about 0.90 DM. The town of Harlingen can be reached by train and by bus from Amsterdam. Likewise Harlingen can be reached by public transport from Amsterdam's international airport (Schiphol). Further travel information will be given in the next circular. Due to the location only a limited number of people can be accommodated. In order to place a reservation we ask those of you who are interested in participating in the workshop to respond as within the next two weeks , but not later than the 1st of June 1995. The second circular will then immediately be distributed among those who have sent their response by then. The second circular will provide more detailed information on the scientific program, further information on travel and on financial support. At that stage a deposit will be required in order to ensure a reservation. Financial support: Pending on decisions of The Royal Academy of Science of the Netherlands and The National Science Foundation of the United States , limited support may be available. Please send your statement of interest, together with a tentative title of your presentation, not later than 1st of June to: U.
